Larissa was crossing the foyer when an engine ruptured the quiet of the afternoon. She wasn’t sure where everyone went during the day, but Peacock Hill was a reasonably peaceful place to work. She’d branched out of the business center—the chairs down there were not suited for long periods of use—and set up with her laptop in the lounge. No one seemed to mind.

She scooted closer to the door and watched as Azure and Matt climbed out of her vintage pickup, laughing. Matt grabbed a hanging bag from behind the passenger seat. Azure lunged for it, but he held it out of reach, shaking his head. It looked like Azure found her dress. Good for her.

Larissa ignored the pang in her chest. Her dress was now for sale on several online sites. She’d get some of her money back, and some other woman would enjoy a picture-perfect day in a little girl’s dream dress. Mom had tried to convince her to keep it and wear it when she did get married. Larissa snorted. Even if that did happen, she wasn’t wearing the dress she’d bought to marry Tom to walk down the aisle to someone else. That was just weird.

She pushed away the flicker of Sean’s face and refused to think about it.

The door opened, and Azure and Matt’s laughter spilled into the foyer.

“Hey. Successful trip, I see. Congrats.”

“Thanks. You want to see it?” Azure could power the house on the wattage coming off her smile.

Not really. “Sure. You want to wait until everyone’s around? Then you could put it on once, and we could all see.”

“That’s a great idea.”

Matt leaned over and kissed the tip of Azure’s nose. “That sounds like girls night in. I’ll see if the guys want to hang.”

“It’s Wednesday. Don’t you have youth?” Azure reached for Matt’s hand. “Did you need me to help?”

“Nah. We’ll manage. I’ll rope Jeremiah into helping, then I’ll talk him into making nachos after. Even Duncan likes the way Jeremiah makes them, and Duncan’s not a nacho guy. Sean planned to hang in Charlottesville a little longer, right?”

Azure nodded.

“Maybe I’ll see if he wants to come down, too. I don’t get the sense he has a lot of time for hanging out with the guys.”

Larissa’s mouth went dry. Sean. She aimed for casual when she spoke. “You’ll do the food in the kitchen here? Girls like to eat too, you know.”

“Maybe. Or we can see if Jer wants to hang at his house. That way we’re not in the way.” Matt shrugged.

Right. Jeremiah still owned a house. That had been mentioned . . . . The group had too many conversations and had absorbed her into them, like she was one of them. On one hand, it was nice. On the other? It wasn’t something she was used to. Her friends—could she even call them that?—would never have welcomed a stranger like these people did. Heck, they hardly welcomed Tom, and Larissa had been engaged to him. Tom’s friends had been a bit more open.
